A Christmas Celebration for the Joy of the Immigration Detainees

On 15 December 2010 a Christmas celebration was held for all detainees at the Immigration Detention Center (IDC) in Suan Phlu lane, Bangkok. All organizations working in IDC including COERR jointly organized the half-day Christmas celebration which started with a Christmas ecumenical prayer service. Christian representatives of various nationalities from each detention cell were allowed to join the prayer service. Then a team of Christmas carol singers visited each holding cell to sing Christmas songs for the detainees. This was followed by the distribution of Christmas gifts to each detainee. 1,200 packs of Christmas gift including 1,200 sets of COERR’s personal hygiene kits and stationery, i.e. tooth paste,   tooth brush, soap, shampoo, washing detergent, towel, notebook, pen, and a box of UHT fresh milk; were given on this occasion. The detainees greatly enjoyed the Christmas celebration.

At present there are around 1,000 – 1,200 illegal immigrant detainees at the Immigration Detention Center. Many were arrested for cause of illegal entry into Thailand, overstayed visas and faked passport.
